Lubbock has some notoriety amongst alien theory enthusiasts, and we all know there are a lot of those around. From Oakville dentists to Hollywood directors, almost everyone has an opinion on whether or not there is life outside of Earth.

Well, Lubbock gave those people something to talk about back in 1951. A V-formation of lights was sighted over the city at this time, and witnessed by several prominent local scientists and photographed by a student at the city's prestigious university. Even using today's technology, these photos have never been proven to be a hoax. Some scientists dismiss the phenomenon as natural (birds or bugs reflecting new lights), but it's hard to believe so many people could think objects that small were really UFOs. The true story behind the Lubbock Lights is still the focus of many Internet project management collaborations between true believers today.

Education

The person who took those photos of the infamous Lubbock Lights attended Texas Technological College, today known as Texas Tech University. This is one of the most prestigious universities in the state. Its main focus is on different engineering areas (graduates may find careers in chemical waste water grit removal or in architecture), but it also includes a medical and law school.

Lubbock is also home to several religious institutions of upper learning, including Lubbock Christian University, Wayland Baptist University, and Sunset International Bible Institute.

Culture

Lubbock is one of the centers in Texas where the old cowboy culture is still remembered, and in fact it still thrives. Faux painting instruction has been popular in the city of late, as residents wish to give a southern country style facade to the outside of their houses.

The city has also been the home of many legends of country music including the lead singers of groups The Dixie Chicks and Lonestar.

The city's cowboy culture is celebrated annually in the National Cowboy Symposium and Celebration. Held in September each year, the Celebration takes a look at all aspects of the cowboy life, from the intellectual (historical essays from students) to pop (songs and cowboy poetry).

Economy

Home to several universities and a large agricultural belt, Lubbock enjoys a diverse economy supporting primary businesses such as farming and service industries including collision repair. Saskatoon residents will find the outlying flat appearance of the countryside familiar. Whereas up north the plains are used for wheat, though, Lubbock's agricultural sector revolves around cotton.
